LF Festival & Fireworks
Time: 5:00pm
This new annual event is set to kick off with a bang! The Friends of Lake Forest Parks & Recreation will debut the new festival. A community fest is planned for all ages -- children, teens, adults and seniors -- with food, music, kids' activities and an expanded fireworks display.

The festivities begin at 5 p.m. at Deerpath Community Park (Deerpath and Hastings Road). Admission is free. Parking will be available at Deer Path Middle School for $10.

Festival highlights include a music stage with live bands, cuisine from local restaurants, a beer/wine garden (alcohol may not be brought into the festival), and a kids' area featuring inflatables, magicians and more. An expanded and more spectacular fireworks display, choreographed to patriotic music, tops off the day's events beginning at 9:30 p.m. (Rain date for fireworks is Saturday, July 7.)

Bopology -- After being gone from the concert series for awhile, Bopology is returning to recreate the nostalgia of swing music with a tight, polished sound. They are one of the top swing bands in Chicago and the Midwest. When you hear those smooth, rich tones of Sinatra style vocals it will take you back. Don't miss their return concert -- it will get you up on your feet.

Manny B and the Rhythm Nights -- You saw their show in 2003 and what a show that was. This four piece act is one of the Midwest premier show bands. Performing a combination of soulful rock, rhythm and blues and much, much more -- plus a few surprises -- they promise to have everyone in Market Square up on their feet and rockin'!

Meet The Fleet

This free event will give you and your little ones a chance to get behind the wheel of some of the big rigs and learn about bulldozers, fire trucks, front end-loaders and the men and women who operate them. Tractors and trucks of every kind will be parked behind Deerpath School so that participants get an up-close look at the equipment. This is a free family event.

Deer Path Gallery

Opening Reception. "Member's Show" members of the Deer Path Art League showcase their artistic talent in the first annual member show The public is welcome.

This performance is the finale to Gorton's Performing Arts Summer Theatre Academy, featuring the acting, singing, dancing, costuming, set design, and construction by its students.

Natural Communities

Restoration Ecologist, Ken Klick often takes on the role of land sleuth to figure out what once was and is now lost. Discover how old land survey records from 1838 play an integral part in understanding the history of different sites. After an indoor presentation on the unique natural communities of our area head out into Shaw prairie, one of the finest original tallgrass prairie remnants in the State of Illinois. Gain a greater understanding of the incredible biodiversity of this imperiled ecosystem and how we can help restore it.

This class will begin at the Lockhart Family Nature Center.

Author Luncheon with Lisa See

Gorton Community Center is thrilled to be partnering once again with the Lake Forest Bookstore to welcome Lisa See, the esteemed author of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Lisa will be reviewing her newest novel, Peony in Love, which is a Random House publication, due on June 26. This book tells the story of three women in seventeenth-century China who become emotionally involved with a famous opera called The Peony Pavilion, which has been known to cause lovesickness and even death. Once again Lisa See explores love and the bonds of female friendship and the age-old desire of women to be heard.

Serenade Under the Stars

So as not to compete with the Summer Serenade of the emerging 17-year Cicadas, only one summer concert will be offered this season -- don't miss it!

If you are tired of the Cicada's cacophony of "song" and want to hear some great folk music in an outdoor cabaret setting, go to Gorton Community Center to hear singer, songwriter, traditional folk artist Mark Dvorak. Mark Dvorak is a folk singer's folk singer who follows unerringly in the footsteps of Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Big Bill Broonzy and Art Theime. He has produced six CDs to date including his latest, "Every Step of the Way" mixing gospel, blues, bluegrass, country and roots under folk music's umbrella.
